After-Hours in NYC: Where People Keep Dancing After 4am

· Updated:

Alcohol sales stop at 4am in New York, but a few licensed clubs keep the dance floor open later without a bar: BASEMENT runs into the morning on Fridays and Saturdays, Nowadays Nonstop goes from Saturday 10pm to Sunday 10pm, and H0L0's Honcho takeovers run from 3pm to 7am. Signal's Night & Day and Refuge's Sunday sunrise do the same in Brooklyn.

Why 4am, and why some clubs go on

New York's Alcoholic Beverage Control Law §106(5) bans alcohol sales on licensed premises from 4am to 8am (to 10am on Sunday) and gives guests half an hour to finish their drinks. It limits drinking, not dancing: a club can stay open after 4am as long as it serves no alcohol. That is the whole after-hours model in New York: the bar closes, the water stays, the DJ keeps playing.
